No 50lbs of wires and $2000.00 stand alone ecu's, no multi stage fuel pumps and expensive return systems, NO P CODES!

With any luck we'll be mating a SBC with an Audi 016 trans. An adapter kit from Kennedy Engineered Products will help consummate the union. :coolnana:

Still, a sub 2000 pound V8 powered exo sounds like as much fun as a bus full of monkeys. Since you run the Scuby driveline, I imagine the wheelbase shouldn't be too much longer than it is now. Any estimates as to where it will be?

Just getting things into place to redesign the firewall, The wheel base is very close but may increase an inch or so.
The cool thing is look at the height, same as the total height of the suby, but you could put two of these motors back there! I see some cool ideas for radiators:clap:

Basically it's 75lbs. or about 4% saved with an aluminum block versus a cast iron block. I wonder if the composite intake manifold, wiring harness, ECU, fuel rail and injectors are lighter than an aluminum intake manifold and carb setup?
Either way, it looks like fun.

One less thing to worry about! Nice trick.
True, I'm going to "cage" the motor as well, (kind of like the prototype where the firewall protruded into the cabin) but this will be a safety cage to stop the engine just in case, I also plan to have a scatter shield around the balancer. So we may have to forgo the cup holders:(
PooK
badermatic
01-01-2012, 07:37 AM
No...say it ain't so....Hmmm... What about reducing the cup holders to one? or relocating the emergency brake?
Is the cage going to cause you to push the seats forward also?
No more so than the type 4, the "hump" so to speak is between the seats, (still behind them)
But we loose a bit of tunnel length. I can relocate the e-brake?
The Porsche for example the boxster uses a cable to stop the engine from entering the cabin, I would feel better with some tube in the way!
There may be room as is...I should know by tues (the basic chassis should be done by then I hope!!!!)

01-01-2012, 05:02 PM
How about the opposite? Say you got hit from behind (or spun at a high rate of speed and hit an object) how about the engine and trans breaking away from the chassis for saftey? It seems it would take a lot of tube to keep the engine and trans unit from being forced into the cockpit in the event of a direct hit.
Just a thought.

The same way door bars stop another race car from coming in on a t-bone. they bleed the energy off as they deform. There is no 100%, not in any car.

That tube splits like the other TR's. I usually split it after I've welded it due to the stresses welding puts on a tube.
I may use a different style on the V8's also, that tube isn't under the roll bar braces its on top and a typical 2 bolt flange may not look right......
The engine and trans will pull strait up as a unit.

That's awesome! What's the eta until it becomes a kit you'd build? Any idea?
Soon! Im finishing some of the details now. I plan to offer the TR-82 as a Basic kit as well with MUCH better prices.
I think one of the issues with the TR's was that we tried to include everything and the kitchen sink in the price, Seats, seat belts, lights, wheels, harness, switches even, and on and on...all personal preference stuff IMHO.
I can still do that but I think a better way than car minus is Basic car plus:thumb2:
PDP is not a production car company that will produce kits and stack them up, but as I develop more and more jigs for engine options I can build a pretty large range of choices into the TR cars that you can order at any time.

Same here...Very interested...I'm wondering if you could squeeze in a trans from an early 2000s S4 6 speed or the fwd A4 6 speed....those would be a bit more common to source than say something only made back in the 80s....not sure if they can be run without electronics and whatnot though...but a carbed LS3 in one of those would be awfully fun!
LS-Fbomb

G50's from 87-98 N/A or turbo will work well in these cars.
I put a LS 346 with a good sized cam and good heads into a 1990 C2.
These trans are built to take abuse and shift much better than most other boxes I've used. Lightning quick shifting. And the 964 N/A boxes have fantastic gearing out of the box for this app. 1st is a little short but that's what 2nd's for.
275/40/17's in the rear, 400 rwhp, 2600 lbs. The N/A box never complained. The same hp in something 800 lbs lighter won't be much different. Just add a pump and cooler if you're expecting track duty.
The cool thing is, is that you can find the 5 (964) or even the 6 speed versions from a 993 C2 or C2S pretty reasonably - $2000-2500.
A 930 box on the other hand...almost unlimited power handling. Crazy good aftermarket and replacement part availability but the shift quality is a bit slower on the down shifts, and some boxes no matter how tight the linkage is, it's difficult to find 1st.

Thinking about a removable windshield brace. Would be slightly different than the original TR-42's single hoop style. The TR-82's would be more along the lines of a T-top shape with rear of each brace attaching behind the roll bars near or at the apex. My drawing certainly won't win any awards, but hopefull it conveys the idea. Your thoughts? :thumbdown2::thumb2:
paintballcars
02-03-2012, 04:53 AM
I think its a great idea....would look pretty sleek, not interupting the rest of the exo frame lines & it will be added protection if the car ever did flip....If I move on one of these TR-82's I was going to have a few full cabin roll cage designs to share with Pook myself
The brace shape won't be a problem Andy, the attachment behind the roll bars may be...?
The down brace tube is at that point on the roll bar and to sit beside it would mean dropping the pickup down the roll bar a few inches....?
But all and all if its what you guys want I'll make it happen!

We would ultimately like the windshield and windshield brace to be powdercoated black so as to not distract from the orignal shape/form of your goregeous VFR. The glossy black on these parts worked nicely on the proto.

I just checked with a friend that works at Ted Wein's (local tire store chain) and he said the widest 17" tire with 50% and below sidewalls is a 225. Especially if you plan on aggressively driving the car.
badermatic
02-14-2012, 05:02 AM
Oh crap! So would a taller tire (55's) with same width (255) on the 17x7 be acceptable? I wouldn't mind something meatier on the backs. Is there a chart posted somewhere that defines tire acceptablity ranges for different wheel sizes and driving behavior?
Steve Jarvis
02-14-2012, 05:41 AM
You can look up tires sizes on tirerack.com and it will show you the rim width range.
With a 255/45R17 the minimum rim width is 8".
Here is an example.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/CompareTires.jsp
Even if you squeeze a 255 on a 7" wheel, it's not going to perform optimally.
I would want a rim closer to 9" for a 255.
As an example, I use a 10" wide wheel for my 275 and an 11.5" wide wheel for my 305.
Later, Steve

Thanks for your help folks. I went on Falken's web site, as well & it clearly shows the appropriate rim width range there for these tires (http://www.falkentire.com/Tires/FK-452-3).
I'm a little miffed that Tire Discount would inidcate that this size combo was OK & let an unsafe/inappropriate size combo out of their shop w/o catching it. I'll be givng them a ring tomorrow.
PooK - did the wheel/tires arrive today?

02-14-2012, 04:19 PM
Actually, I called Discount Tire tonight and they were still working! I expressed my concerns regarding the size issue. The salesman didn't think there was going to be a problem based on the expected weight of the car, but we agreed to swap the 17x7's for some 17x8's to err on the side of safety (& alleviate my concerns). The 8" wide rim is acceptable for the 255/45's and the 235/40's according to the Falken web site. Tire style was the Falken FK 452.
I went with the Konig Airstikes (see attached). Wheel choices in the 5x110mm lug pattern are limited. Not a particular favorite of my son's but I like it, and it should do the trick.:lift:

Thanks again for your advice!
I was doing research on this and I did find some wheel adapters that would space the wheel out 1 inch but allow the use of 5x114.3 which has much more options (same lug pattern as ford mustangs) and with the reduced weight of the car overall, the added 1" spacer shouldn't be an issue for safety and you could run a 9" rim out back and get some 265s or even 275s!

Harrison also makes a taillight specifically to slip inside a a sand rail/dune buggy frame. But they are not as bright (24 LEDs) and have a smaller OD (1.5"flange wi/ 1.3" housing). I believe your tubes are bigger - right?

So what is this silver change i hear of instead of having the frame red?
Welllllll, we can't find anyone that will do the translucent red and stand behind it....tried three powder coaters here so I let Andy take over and now I'm just pick up and delivery.

The silver was our fall back position. But after some discussion, the powder coater & I decided we would give the shimmer candy red a shot.
Requires the silver as a reflective base coat.
Am keeping my fingers crossed.
So candy red...cool, did he have an eta?

He has the silver already on order and would have to order the red. No ETA yet.

The powder coats (silvadillo and shimmer candy red) have been applied, and the frame is ready for pick up! Apparently, it turned out better than expected (deep rich candied red). I can't wait to see this thing.....
That big sbc ain't so big when when you compare it to a little 911 6cyl is it!
This is gonna be cool!

I bet the 911 engine is making more power. :)
Cant be sure but this sbc combo is supposed to be high 300's so its more than the 911 in this case.
either way its gonna be a hoot!

Looking good there Pook. Coming together nicely.
Hey so what color is this thing anyway? Candy apple red or magenta? Looks like the color changed on the drive down from London......
Not sure what you guys settled on but its not magenta...in the sun its candy red with a light metallic look. Inside with no sun its a whole different color? Almost a wine color....neither are correct on my cell phone pics.

OK glad to hear it's an artifact of the phone. Candy red with a light metallic is what we were aiming for. Long live the sun!!
I can't really say that, I like it in the shade as well!

Woof!
Looking great!
Hey, last time I looked that tranny was silver. You must not have liked the mismatching red??
Assumming it fits, the Spectre dual air intake we discussed should work out nicely.
There is a ton of room for that intake. There is 23" between the brace tubes as well.
The trans was dull silver and Chevy Orange....did not compliment the red!

Now that's cool! Nice design!
Good choice on the tranny color. That works for me. Matches the engine block.
The air intake size still worries me. I couldn't find a overall length & width, but I'm guessing it will be close. Keeping fingers crossed.
Should be on her feet this weekend Andy.

Danny - As you suspected, its looking like that intake will most likely fit. Apparently, it's 22 inches at the widest part (at the filter cones). Should have a 1/2" clearance on either side at minimum at the rollbar braces. With any luck, it won't extend that far anyway........(Am awaiting word on a total length).

Update: the intake filter cones will extend rearward past the braces. We should be in good shape!

We picked up the TR-82 at PooK's palace this weekend. As they say, the car is much better looking in person. PooK did a great job building this beauty. After gathering some goodies and providing some instruction PooK sent us on way. 14 hours of driving later we arrived back in NY at about 3:00am. Now the work begins for us. Can't wait. Documentation of our trial and tribulations will be presented here. :run:
Thanks again Pook. Feel better.

So my son & I made some progress this week on the TR-82. :D
Ordered and installed the radiator, center coolant tubes, and a fuel sending unit. The gas tank, however, is a bit constricted so that the float would hit the wall of the tank if the instructions were followed to the letter. We made some minor adjustments.
Also obtained a slave clutch cylinder for the tranny, put in the driver's seat and adjusted the steering column height.
Hope to finish off the fuel and cooling systems by mid week.

Well life got in the way of my good time. Didn't get back to the beast until tonight. Got most of the coolant hosing installed. Took much longer than I thought it would due to the tight, confined area near the bottom of the radiator and routing into the tunnel chase. Will need a two foot extension to complete the upper line near the engine.
Tomorrow I hope to work on the fuel line. Have most of the parts. Anybody know how to get from a AN12 tank fitting to a 5/8" hose? The AN12 fitting with nipple adapter that I bought is much too large on the nipple end (I can see the comments now)
I also had the windshield frame powder coated this week & rec'd the Bugpack windshield rubber. Any recommnedations out there for adhesive, caulk, whatever to install?? Do I actually need any?
Thanks for the advice.
You may have to go from an12 to 8 adapter then a 8 to nipple. Or a step down double barb nipple to nipple that ends in 5/8. Or what ever it takes as its just suction....lol!
BT was right the an12 was to much but adaptable.

We made some additional progress tonight with the fuel lines.
An AN12 to AN8 adapter, AN8 to nipple adpater, and additional coolant hosing were ordered & should help finish off these systems.

Made a little progress this weekend. Two steps forward, one back.
Decided to add the coolant bypass hose, which seems to be a requirement on SBC's with vortec heads. 1st attempt - tried 90° elbow fittings on water pump & intake manifold. Couldn't turn them due to intake & pump obstructions. 2nd attempt - got straight pipe fittings. 1 fits, the other still tough to get at with wrench/sockets but got it 1/2 way in. Should be water tight....but the hose kinks due to sharp bends. I just discovered that Performance Steel makes 90° elbows that are extended to clear obstructions and can be had in 2 parts for tight spots. They're on order. I will then be able to shorten the hose.
Also removed the heater hose fitting... as I won't be needing one to these. Again it was tough to get at the nut for removal since Chevy put an extra reinforcement ridge adjacent to the heater hose port. Had to buy more tools.....
Water temp sensor will most likely go up on the intake manifold, as shown.
Oil pressure sensor will go back near distributor or near oil filter. In either case, I will need a 90° adapter to make it fit.
Any reason to buy new tools is Ok by me! Lol!
PooK
Thanks for the updates Badermatic. I'm enjoying them.

Had some success today.
Home Depot provided the male-male pipe extension and female-female 90° elbow so that I could attach the oil pressure sensor. Yeah!
Got some extended 90° elbows from Performance Steel. Installed, attached hose, and now no kinks. Yeah!
I was initially concerned about pully alignment, even after placement of a shim behind the crank pulley. Didn't look like they were lining up yesterday. A suggestion was made to swap out the water pump, as i may have the wrong one. After looking at the pulleys again. I may just keep them as is & test with belt. I am not seeing the slight deviation I saw yesterday. Maybe I need my eyes examined?
Developed a new bracket for the tranny linkage. Metal is much thicher than previous version and is in the appropriate spot for the linkage pin. Yeah! Will paint it black if it gets final approval from the shift linkage guy.
Installed the gas tank line fittings. Getting a little tight in this area. Before I commit to a fix I want to see how the shifter & linkage will impact the tunnel area.
That is a tight area! I would also wrap the fuel line with DEI sleeve.
