Does anyone understand why the Atom is rated at 1.2 and the Caparo T1 at 3g on the skid pad? Is the difference in tires really that great?

I would imagine that once the tyres were warm there would be much better grip on the T1

What helps the T1, is the center of gravity and down force from the body work, that plays a big role.

What are the speeds achieved on the skid pad? I didn't think they were very high so I am not sure how much of an influence downforce would actually make.

Good Point. :hscratch:

Where did you get the skid pad data? Owners have documented Atom's pulling >2 lateral g's at the track

Im sorry not even 1.2 but 1.08 (car and driver)

The tires must have a huge influence.

That's right, I saw that report. It did not all match up with the (unofficial) results Brammo was seeing at the GM testing grounds

That makes sense.

On a 200 ft. diameter skidpad (which is what R&T uses I think), 1 G is equal to a speed of around 40 mph.

The 200ft skidpad results will not be the peak lateral G's. Our race prepped MX5 pulls just .98 on a skid pad but regularly sees 1.4G on the track. I have the datalogs to show it. 2G's does sound a bit extreme but with big wings at the front and back I suppose its possible. Downforce is an amazing thing ;)

The Atom is about 0.9 to 1.1 g depending on who's skidpan from the tests I've seen, how much wear on it's tyres, tempreture etc.

0.98 at the skid pan and 1.4 in a Miata is impressive and I would like to know what rubber?

The Caparo T1 is a ground effects car and actually at slow speed may be quite low in the 0.7/8 area because it's set up to very stay flat to get the best effect from the venturi's at high speed and therefore struggles to get any decent load to the outside tyres at low speed - Top Gear had this problem when they tested it.

My last sports racer would get 2g's at just 1 corner that had very slight dip that loaded the car at that point. Thats 420 kgs, front air dam and medium rear spoiler with sticky Formula 3 Avon slicks. It was also the corner that took out my first motor (Kawa ZX11) through oil starvation because of that 2g loading!

I was just going to say that. I'd be curious how the atom with full carbon wing track kit would compare, if at all...

Depends on your needs, I would rather an Atom in the mountains any day of the week. Its one of the fastest road cars in the world in difference to the Caparo being one of the fastest track day cars in the world.

I guarantee every 10th corner or so would be an exercise in futility in the Camparo and the tighter the mountain the worse it would be and so what if you could do 150mph around a 200 meter radius bend, who wants to on a public road.

in my opinion anything over 1g on a public road is ridiculous. my mini cooper S is about as fast a car as i want to drive on the street.

i have lots of datalogs on the track from a wide variety of cars. an atom with front and rear wings and R compound tires pulls a maximum of 1.5g. without wings it's 1.3g. on street tires 1.1g. these are peak readings and sustained is about .1g-.2g lower.

to get 2g cornering you need very sticky tires that are fully warmed up (i.e. in bonding mode) and/or downforce on the order of 3/4 car's weight at 100 mph.

caparo relies on lots of downforce to generate the claimed cornering numbers but not just any driver could do it and certainly not on the street. on top gear clarkson couldn't drive it worth anything but the stig posted fastest time they ever saw from any car. a 3g turn is terribly uncomfortable and without proper whole-body lateral support i at least wouldn't be able to drive a car at those levels. even 2g is kind of a pain in the neck (literally, if you do it repeatedly without a neck brace).

I remember get some G's in my Tony Kart that made very "sick" uncomfortable :eyecrazy:

karts will generate up to 2g cornering when set up right with no downforce :)

i had a 125 shifter for a while and got tired of bruised ribs. people have been known to actually crack ribs from cornering in those.

that's why i came up with dp4 - same or better performance, less abuse on the body :)

.

Refreshing to see such an opinion.

Not to mention the level of seriousness things start to go to as you climb higher in G's and the suddeness of things when it goes wrong.

To quote Monty Python - Four Yorkshiremen, "You cant tell the young folk that, they wouldnt believe ya".

it is still a blast to drive my Atom on the street even if I'm going the speed limit. You get to enjoy the sun, the unobstructed view, the engine noise, wind in your hair, bees in the epiglottis....

Plus, my mini is outright boring since I got the Atom. Feels like piloting a houseboat compared to the Atom.

I went to a shifter cart race cause i was thinking of getting one.
A kid broke three ribs and the next week someone died. no thanks.... racing is not THAT fun.
