View Full Version : Ideas for Exhaust system: Honda K-series
In contrast to the Atom, to my great delight and surprise there appears to be plenty of room behind the engine in the SL-R, that is room to work, and room for an exhaust system. So.. make one right? We'll see what is developed.
In the mean time I'm also aware of Calscot's efforts to produce a quality, albeit expensive exhaust system for his Atom. If we are using the same engine, would not the same exhaust likely work?

On page 9 and 10 of that thread from that link you will see shots of Calscot's exhaust system made by Hytech. I wonder if it is reproducible without a car present, and if it would fit (as made for an Atom) on a Superlite Roadster. I can't tell if the rear engine mount on the SL-R is different enough to cause problems. That is the best quality exhaust I have ever seen.
At Atomfest ( a big race day for multiple Atoms) I saw numerous mufflers blow out, exhaust pipes burning powder coated frames..(I took pictures of this stuff) and other crap. Since then I've seen good and really bad examples of attempts at exhausts for Atoms.
I'm just kicking around crazy ideas. Atoms are one of the SL-R's closest relatives. If an Atom exhaust would fit, would there be any disadvantage to using one? They appear to need quite a bit of bending to fit within the tight frame of an Atom. But, I really wouldn't mind that if the effect on performance was negligible. The exhaust profile would be very compact. A bracket could be engineered to support it.
Your thoughts?

While there is a lot of room behind the engine in the SL-R, we've also got a bar that runs behind the engine. I believe this will be one of the biggest obstacles that we'll have to work around. I can't tell for sure but it looks to me like the hytech exhaust would interfere with this bar.
Maybe if we could get a car to hytech they could build us a custom exhaust. Do you know where they are located? I've seen their name quite a bit on k20a.org and I think it would be best if we had someone familiar with the K-series build the exhaust.

And most importantly...Have you heard the hytech exhaust? I was wondering how it sounded on Calscot's Atom. I'd prefer mine on a little bit of the LOUD side.
I wonder if we just took some really good pictures with some measurements if they'd be able to build us an exhaust from that. California is a little too far for me.
I think it is clear from your helpful picture Chad that the upper portion of the Atom exhaust wouldn't fit because of the bolt on frame tube that would intersect with the location of the muffler. But.. this portion of the exhaust as seen on Calscots Atom would appear to be workable.
I know this is all hot air. I have nothing better to do at the moment.
(the picture will not upload for the moment)

It looks like if they were to just bend the pipe where the four pipes go into one out a little bit it would work. The muffler would just be on the other side of the bar.
The only bad thing is, the money that I set to the side for the SL-R is pretty much gone. And I can't find a place that will insure me until I turn 26 (this January). So... I might have to wait until I get my exhaust. I'm wondering how much Calscot paid for them to make his exhaust.

Here is a UK Company that has a version that might work but it is in UK. Looks like it might? be shaped right but who knows.
Recently I have contacted Tom @ www.unique-fabricating.com and he has offered to make one for the Superlite Roadster. Chad and I will keep everyone posted..
That actually looks like it might work! I wonder if I could just "Borrow" one to see if it fits on an SL-R. :D

Karlo, is this an Elise Honda exhaust without the muffler? It may be an off the shelf item from Lotus. I like the long runs that will tune for a lower end torque boost.
Any idea what the cost may be?

I thought it would be great solution, he responded below.
Geary from EliseHonda.com "I won't get involved in headers as I have to buy these in qty and there is a 3 month lead time."
Sun International has their version but it is too much, 2K. I think Tom might be the answer for now.

Did Tom give a price estimate?

Not yet.
Well, not with any intent to be pessimistic: Any exhaust I've seen and liked so far has been obscenely expensive. (like the two or three we've pointed at)
We need to find a company that makes an exhaust product similar to the SL-R i.e. good quality and performance at a reasonable price. (reasonable from the perspective of the middle class)

Installed Sunspeed Header Pics. Sunspeed has them manufactured by someone else, I will call the manufacture and see what he charges.

Gage, I have also installed a Hytech exhaust about 6 months ago, and its slightly different than Calscots, and it is much quiter and better suited for the NA setup. Go to this link to see some pics:

Also in that thread is a dyno/tune of my K20a, the results were amazing. NO need to supercharge a K20a if its done right if you need more power, just tune it. If anyone has a Hondata, I am more than willing to email my tune, so all you have to do is just upload it! The tune is a hell of a difference, makes the car just that much better.
I am seriously thinking about going down this SL-R route, I just have to see the windshield option before pulling the trigger, as I want to try to do an SB100 car again next year before this program in california disappears all together.
If anyone wants me to ask John at Hytech any questions or forward any measurements, I would be more than glad to do that. I stay in contact with him. The exhaust was more or less 2k, but anyone who takes a close detailed look at it realizes how much work and thought went into it. Its form and function all in one. They are quite frankly the best Honda exhaust maker in the country by far.

That exhaust you have looks quite amazing! I'd sure like to see a video or atleast some sound clips just so I could hear it.
