I'm working on converting my G35 back to stock so I can sell it and buy this car but I would like to have an idea of when the final version will be unveiled.

I also would like to learn when the SL-R will be available. New pictures seem to me to be a reasonable interim but so far they are'nt forthcoming either. The last update was that both the SL-R and the electric version were going to be announced and available in mid January. I hope this delay is just because Fran is so busy desiging and building.

I'm planning on buying one as soon as all of this snow melts! Not even I am crazy enough to try and drive one of these when the roads are all covered in ice. Also, I can't buy one when I haven't seen THE FINAL PICUTRES YET!!! This is torture!

I talk to Fran Weekly. Currently the chassis / frame is set up (engine mounts) for the Ecotec. The K20 Honda engine is being setup this coming week. The body panel are being finalized. Fran wants to get the product out to the public "right the first time". So any delays are because it needed to meet Frans high standards  .
I went to the tag office yesterday and got some info on registering the car for the road. Not a big deal, other than a few forms it appears I will just have to go to an office and get an affidavit for road-worthiness. The DMV compliance office that would inspect the car is supposed to to call me tomorrow to go over the 'checklist' of items that she would be looking for on an inspection when the project is done.
Also looking online it appears that it would just be tons easier to call the car a Lotus 7 replica since it kind of, sort of, somewhat is, kindalikea 7! Then you just need a few forms and a check! Plus then it could get antique plates to save a few $$$.

yep...it's true. I've broken down and decided to get one. However, Fran is one hard guy to get a hold of. I've left a message and wrote him an e-mail but haven't heard anything back yet. Hopefully I can reach him tomorrow and work out all the details. I'm thinking K20A, double adjustable shocks and either red or black. I think black will look cooler, however red will decrease my chances of getting run over.

Ha ha actually I have heard that the red spectrum is difficult for the eye to see thats why they changed aid cars from red to green. Either way black will look like a bat mobile and cant be compromised.

I am not hard to get hold of ...just busy.
Drop me an email if you need some quick answers but make sure to put Roadster in the subject as I receive MASSES of spam daily.
We did final fit on the SRT-4 drivetrain and I have to say they are the hot rod bargain package...:cool3:

Thats the route I want to go. Do you guys think that you wont be able to use a good amount of the hp from the srt-4 because you will have to shift by they time it starts making boost because its such a light car?

My sentiments exactly; and I have the same concern with the Mazda MZR DISI setup, though I have been enjoying my MS3 more than usual lately, maybe it's finally breaking in, or the warmer weather?

well it should drive and build boost the same as in a srt-4, just be a way faster car.
Count me in as one who has an SL-R on order. I just sent my deposit to Fran.:coolnana:
Looks like Friday I am going to Miami to buy the engine / trans and have it shipped up to him for a test fit.
Now that DMV hurdle....

How much is the deposit?
50% of the base price ($15,995) plus 100% of the options, which I ordered everything available (upgraded Digidash Pro, Double adjustable shocks, roll hoop, windshield / wipers). The windshield is not an available option yet, but I included payment for it with my purchase agreement. the deposit totalled a little over $11k. I'm going to Miami Friday to pay for an engine / trans to be shipped to Fran (K20A3 I think).

^ any reason why you went with the A3? i mean its pretty much the base model k20, or do u just not care if the car is rediculously fast?
I have not bought it yet, but the A3 as i understand it has 160 hp, and offers a 6 speed limited slip diff. I would rather have a little less power and be able to use it all instead of lots of power and an open diff with less traction. If the shop offers me an RSX-S motor (200 hp) with an LSD I'll go that route. The price for the 160 with a 6 speed LSD is around $4k (with about 20k miles). I also prefer a USDM motor for parts availability and ease of registration as compared to a JDM motor.
I figure I can add a centrifugal SC to the base motor and get around 250 hp or so which is plenty to me.

no the A3 does not come with a LSD or a 6spd, its comes with an open diff 5spd, in the US the only one to have a LSD is the new civic Si. and there is no problem with parts availability between a jdm motor and US motor, they all use the same parts.
and yea a USDM k20a2 can be had for $4000 from here..

Also car-parts.com has many reputable salvage shops selling low mileage motors and transmissions.
Thanks, I'll talk to them also. Do you guys think that a K20A2 200 hp engine with an open diff will have a hard time getting traction out of corners? It seems like a car with this kind of power / weight ratio definitely would benefit from an LSD.
BT
You most definitly will want an LSD. Just order a transmission that came with one, or get an aftermarket LSD and have it installed.
Somewhere around here I have a list of the trannies tht came with LSD's.

Thanks, that is really helpful in understading what engine / transmission combinations were produced by Honda. Can a transmission from an '06 Civic Si be attached to a 04 RSX-s motor (if I can't find an '06 motor / trans available)? In other words, what transmission mounts are interchangeable?
BT

all the k-series transmissions should be interchangeable as far as i know.
but yea, u could get whatever u want and put a Quaife lsd in it, but those do run about a grand+install, so then your in the price range of just picking up a JDM k20a with a LSD tranny.

Thanks for the posted list. Didn't see any K24 trannies though. Are those viable options as well?

^ im pretty sure as long as they are from a TSX or Accord i would say yes.

I'd like to see data on the K24 trannies if anyone has it.
Cool. the shop I am looking at in Miami has all varieties of engine and transmissions apparently. I will verify that they can put a 6 speed LSD equipped trans on a K20Z1 motor. That should be good for a start...
:coolnana:
BT
The Miami shop was a bust for trying to get a RSX-S motor with a 6 speed / lsd tranny. Car-parts.com looks like the best bet, I have a K20Z3 motor / trans from an 06 Civic Si with 40k miles for around $4k shipped to Fran. Getting a few pictures sent to me and I should have it on the way tomorrow...
BT
As far as I know any RSX (K20)transmission will bolt up to a K-24A2 from a TSX.
I spoke to Fran this morning and it looks like April 16th is going to be my shop visit (in the afternoon). I plan on catching a flight out at 6 AM arriving in Detriot at around 1PM. Grab some lunch and then to the shop. Fran said my car is probably going to be done by then (that would be awesome)!!!
:coolnana::coolnana::coolnana:
I'm having a party at my house on May3rd I think so maybe the car can make its way back to FL by then!!!

I always say it is better to be lucky than good. Made the plane reservations this morning, so I should be at Fran's shop around 3 ish on the 16th of April. My wife asked if I would be able to test drive the car on the visit. I told her no, but that didn't matter since I put a deposit for the car already. She said "What happened to 'We need to save money'?" I said, "What do you think we have been saving money for?"

I wish my wife was that easy to convince. Grin
She said as long as I can still pay the bills and take her to Alaska sometime she's good with it.

I've sold 3 x SL-Rs to Australian customers so far, the first is being air freighted next month.
None of these guys were early enough to be the first customer though.

From talking to Fran it's looking like mid to late April for me. Fran has been known to deliver a little early however... I'm crossing my fingers. I'll be posting pictures as soon as it gets here.

Congrats.
It's looking like being an SL-R owner is going to be a popular club. :D
Personally I can't wait to drive one. :thumb2:

Then I think you may get it at the very end of April or early May. I don't think Fran wants any photos of a finished car floating around until after the Knott's Berry Farm show.
I hope I can see some real body panels and colors when I go to the shop on April 16th.
I am thinking that maybe my best bet is to buy the panels black and have a local paint shop do a paint scheme over that so that a light colored body panel doesn't shout out from the inside of the car or inside the fenders, etc...
I'm confused!

If I do end up getting the car shipped to me before Knottsberry, out of respect for Fran I will not post any pictures. This is Fran's car and it's his privilege to release the first pictures. Though I will promise to take as many pictures as I can during the build process and post them up very soon AFTER the final pictures have come out.
I would do the same. If Fran asked me to hold off on posting any pictures until X date I would do that so I could get the car earlier!!!
:)
