It may interest some to know - The older Misubishi 1.8 Cordia Turbo (thats Australia speak, don't know what you call them in other places) and the 1.6 n/a Colt ran a gearbox with a vacuum operated 2 speed internal diff - the early Colt had 2 gearshifters, the normal 4 speed shifter and an "Economy"/"Power" stick which operated a vacuum switch to change the diff. The later Colt and Cordia Turbo had a normal looking 5 speed but the 5th gear change actually operated the vacuum switch for the diff.
By putting a manual electrical switch to operate the vacuum diff on the gearstick, you can actually operate the gearbox as an 8 speed close ratio box - it works with stunning results, I have personally done it to a number of Cordia Turbo's
Just a possible option for an Exo project, Cordia's are very capable of big HP with reliability :-)
