Ok, it's a flat 4 so it must be
1966 Volkwagon 40hp,
Alfa Romeo Alfasud 1.3,
Lancia Flavia 2.0
or a Honda Golwing 1200?
How did I do, did I win?
Gage puts on his wishful thinking Cap.
One that is easily attainable in the United States?

Actually on the serious side there must be a few of the Subaru flat 6's laying around in the States?

Close --- Subaru Flat 4
Good aftermarket support and readily available State side.
So, is this a WRX engine?

Hi Gage,
You guessed right its has an JDM EJ20 Subaru WRX STI Redtop engine in it running about 300bhp expected weight is around 750kg all up or less,so should go pretty well. I am looking forward to trying it !
Cheers Simon
Great choice. Do the standard WRX motor and the STI Motor have the same mounting points? A stock WRX motor can be modified to produce plenty of extra horse power.
I'm also surprised to hear you give a very realistic guess on the weight of the car. Gage tips his hat in respect.
It will be very fast with an STI motor.

As far as I know Gage the motor mounts are the same.
The weight figure I feel is very realistic as with the Aprilia engine in the car, it weighed 540kg all up. So deduct 65kg for engine 35kg for diff thats 100kg off so down to 440kg, add Subaru turbo engine and box max 300kg as I havnt weighed it yet but its alloy except for engine internals is 740kg.
So there is still scope and a good possibility it will be lighter.
We have an engine tuner in the UK who has succsefully tuned an sti motor to 550bhp and has covered 60,000 test miles with no reliability issues. but 550bhp and sub 740kg would be insane, I reckon 300 ish should be enough for anyone.
The main reason for this engine was also its very low centre of gravity being able to get all the weight forward of the rear axle line and very low down in the chassis, this will make it handle extremley well, and it should put its power down pretty well also, and in the Uk the cars are very cheap full cars from £1500.00 £2500 buys a very nice car sell of what you dont need very cheap power for builders. Like you say it has lots of bang for your bucks.
I have tryed to upload a sneak preveiw picture of the motor in the frame, but I dont have much luck uploading pics so if it dosnt appear. I will try again.
Cheers
Simon

What trans are you using (old FWDs)? or how are you converting it to a FWD configuration.

hehe i have a 3.3 from an SVX.... but thats going in my legacy wagon w00t!:coolnana:
and btw, i wouldnt bother with an old XT 2.7, go eg33 (SVX) or ez30 (newer legacys). ez30s are hardly any longer than an ej25

The gearbox is converted from 4wd to2wd by removing the rear diff transfer.
and locking the diff. So the FWD driveshafts are now driveing the rear wheels. In this configuration it gives a true mid engine layout. Although a 6 cylinder svx motor is interesting and it may fit but these are a scarce in the UK.

^ yea, idk if i would bother with an eg33 it would be sweet, but they are a good 3-4 inches longer than a ej22. i know i will have to get a custom radiator for my legacy so that i can move my radiator in front of the radiator support in order to get the engine in.
but like i said the ez30 from the H6 legacy outbacks is only about an inch or so longer than the 4 banger.

I guess I had better show pics of my WRX powered beastie (think Radical but not).
Hmm, where are they though?

I see they are using the early Subaru gearbox. Box is week as piss. Try the later 6 speed boxes much stronger. Don't copy the Sakers use the later 6 speed or think outside the square, Audi 012 box with an adaptor plate. Early WRX box and 550hp aint going to last unless you start spending money on gearsets.
I run a stock 5sp gearbox on my 430 hp '06 legacy reliably. There should be absolutely no issue running it in a car as light as the vstorm. Don't go 6 speed, it is an extra shift that you do not need, the time it takes to shift will only slow you down.
I would think that the EJ255 would be the best option of all. The EG33 was derived from the EJ22 with 2 extra cylinders and higher compression. The EG33 could handle 500+ hp reliably, but there is not much forced induction background on that car (I know, I owned a '93 SVX, there was no space in the engine bay or bumpers). I would not trust that much power on an EZ series 3.0 or the new 3.6. The EZ series engines are not as robust for a good turbocharging setup, hence the reason they are not that much bigger than the EJ22 "4 banger".
I would personally split the difference and go with the EJ255 as there are SO MANY upgrades you can do and tuning is easily done. Did I say how many upgrades there are for the EJ255? there are TONS!

This makes me very interested in what this would cost in the US. I've been thinking about selling my STi for an exo car and I'd love to be able to stick with the Suby powerplant.
