"UK built Ariel Atom with a Rotrex Supercharged Honda K20-R fully built motor producing almost 900 BHP per ton.

This Atom was imported by it's original US owner in 2005 from the UK as a 220HP model and was one of first Atoms ever in the US. I bought it in original condition with just a couple of thousand miles on it in June 07.

In October 07, I purchased a Rotrex Supecharger kit from TTS Performance in the UK. The kit consisted of a Rotrex C30-94 Supercharger with a custom fabricated air to air Intercooler and piping to fit into the Atoms Ram Air intake box. 750CC RC Injectors and a half decent tune on the original ECU finished off the list of stuff for the stage 1 upgrades. After a very long weekend of late nights and more than a few beers, I managed to install this kit in the Atom.

Even in it's original 220BHP form, this is an awesome machine. At just over 1100lbs, 220BHP gives 0-60 acceleration times of about 3.4 seconds. Driving the car one day with 220BHP and then a few days later with a supercharger at 475BHP is quite a contrast. I was literally speechless. I could wheelspin the rear wheels in 5th at 100MPH on a dry road when punching the gas. Granted, my R-compound tires were cycled out and hard as bricks, but it's hard to describe such performance.

Stage 2 of the upgrades started in November 07. I handed over my baby to John Grudinski of Hytech in Irvine CA. John builds the best exhaust systems on the planet for all sorts of high end racing and tuner applications. He also happens to be a master engine builder and a Honda nut.
The goal of stage 2 on the upgrades was to build out the engine to handle the power and to get a much better ECU and tune. We installed Darton Sleeves, Carrilo Rods, Weisco Pistons, customized oil pump to eliminate cavitation up to 10K rpm, Hytech Baffled Sump System. The head was sent out to Endyn in TX for machining, porting and polishing and O ringed. Hytech installed new cams, titanium valves and inconnel seats. A complete new header and exhaust system designed also by Hytech. New Hondata K-Pro ECU. Tuned by Hytech and Doug McMillan of Hondata."

My thought is, ready to run with all fluids. Peter has spared no expense in preparing his car. :flag:

OMFG the turbo is right next to his passengers head! :nervous: Have you ever seen what happens when a turbo overspeeds? Please tell me he is going to put some burst protection around the compressor housing at least. If that thing were to let go it would shower the passenger with shrapnel traveling at hundreds of miles an hr!

How do I know this? I work in a turbo development lab.

It is a cool car non the less. But safety first.

A centrifugal compressor is exactly the same component as a turbocharger compressor. It only takes once for someone to end up dead. The tip speed on the wheels can exceed the speed of sound especially if the wheel is mechanically driven by a pulley and gear set. If the compressor lets go the compressor housing tends to get pushed away when the blades dig in and try to straiten out. Once this happens the debris shoots out radially. There are huge chunks missing from the concrete floor at work. We have a cage that we put around the turbo during burst tests. It looks like chain male but much harder and thicker. The aluminum and titanium wheels have blown holes in it!

I love this build. Im not criticizing. Just pointing out that some protection would be worth the extra weight. :old:

well seing the car and the rotrex unit firsthand, and being run at the dyno, the rotrex itself is pretty bulletproof. In fact something accidently got sucked in and the entire unit had to be opened up and redone, including the turbine blades. All this and the unit did not explode or become dangerous at all. Having said that, I live 5 minutes from him, and I will definitely pass this on.

Looks like he did fairly well considering his competition and last minute fixes.

I have to say, rotrex is a great brand but never say never your just asking for trubble, im a TECH with a electricity company, and i have seen things break that in your wildest dreams u would never think would break. Saftey first and a brace on both sides would not look out of place , cause if that thing lets go the driver is left with the aftermath

Same here, 1 year mining equipment field engineer. To get a work ticket you must train for 3 days in safety and they show you all the dead people accidents, quite amazing some of the simple things that can get ya, far safer things than an impeller wheel at big rpm, hence big inertia next to your head.

Yeah, but you can't get any bettery turbine spool sound than that. :)
