View Full Version : Bill Tracy's Superlite Roadster build thread
Here is where I will post all the info on the building of the Superlite Roadster I put on order last week.
So far I have the following info:
Base car price: $15,995
Options added:
Digidash Pro upgrade
Double adjustable shocks upgraded from single adjustable
Removable Roll hoop
Windshield / wiper
The toal of the options was around $3k, so a deposit is required of 50% of the base cost plus 100% of the options, or around $11k.
The tires required are 225/45-17 front and 245/45-17 rear. I went with the Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R from Tire rack for about $670 delivered to Race Car Replicas. These tires have good wet driving characteristics, and extreme summer performance. They were $156 for the rear, and $159 for the front per tire, plus a little for shipping ($38?). They arrived at Fran's shop the morning after I ordered them.

The engine selection was a big question mark. In the end I decided on a used Honda engine from a 2006 Civic Si that has 200hp and a 6 speed manual transmission. The transmission includes a helical limited slip differential which I think is an important component on a very light car. Wheelspin in the corners would not be productive. I ended up finding a complete 'swap' from www.autoadventure.net . 'Al' was very helpful and sold me the entire swap (engine / trans / ECU / ignition / Immobilizer / drive shafts / Exhaust header / accessories / sensors / shifter w/ cables / mounts / DBW pedal) for $3950 and charged only $250 shipping to Fran's shop. They offer a startup guarantee which is all I was looking for. This engine uses Drive By Wire for the throttle (although I read that it uses a small amount of cable), so it is yet to be seen how this will work! An alternative is to ditch the DBW pedal and replace the throttle body with an earlier RSX-s TB and ECU. An engine management upgrade called K-pro is offered by Hondata for the RSX ECU, but not for the 06 Civic Si. The only Hondata ECU work for the 06 Si engine is a reflash that changes the Vtec range to boost mid range HP costing around $600, but that only gets a gain when you also have an improved intake, header, and exhaust (I/H/E). Anyway, here are a few pictures of the engine swap.
BT
I installed a four post lift in my garage to ensure storage space and ability to work on the car when it arrives.
A few pictures of the install / completed setup.
The lift is from www.aclifts.com . The model is the AC-07S Titan SUV . Total cost was around $4k, and it took me and my father in law about 8 hours to assemble.:thumb2:

I have a trip set to visit Race Car Replicas on April 16th. Fran said if my motor arrives around the end of this week the chances are good that the assembly of the car would be done by the time I got there! I'm really looking forward to this trip!!!

Great beginning BT!!!
You know, all good stories have some sort of major conflict that has to get resolved to make it interesting. We'll see what impediments there are for completing this project, but Fran should give me a real good running start... Fortunately the worst case that I see is that I might spend a few more $$$ to get everything just right, but that's cool with me. I'm just really glad Fran has made this possible by keeping the basic roller price so reasonable.
Thanks!

You sure look to have a great start on this kit. That 06 Si engine looks brand new and I am sure will treat you right, your my new idol and I sure wish I had the same size garage you have.
Damn Nice start,
Dave
Thanks for the compliments. I forgot to note that the engine is Honda model K20Z3 for others looking to use the same (or avoid it!).

Congrats Bill and thanks for documenting everything in this thread - should be very cool to see the entire process! AZDave and I are getting things lined up to get a couple SL-R's in Arizona - so you know we'll be following everything closely.

Not to hijack, but my work is mostly in Arizona (north Scottsdale). If you get some projects going there maybe I can lend a hand if I am in town for work. Strange that I live in Florida but work almost exclusively in AZ and UT. Great roads out west, you guys are lucky!

certainly makes for a lengthy commute!
Dave and I are both in Mesa -and thanks for the offer!
I just verified shipping info on the engine / trans package and it is in transit today to Indianapolis (Old Dominion freight), with an expected delivery to Fran's shop in Michigan on Monday the 24th!!! And I commute only about 7-8 times per year, so it's not too bad.

You may not have gotten that far in your thinking, but what engine upgrades are you planning? Is 200 hp enough?
BT
You may not have gotten that far in your thinking, but what engine upgrades are you planning? Is 200 hp enough?
Get the car running with the basic package. Keep it simple.
Then the Rotrex Supercharger kit will come out for that engine.. hehe
I would prefer the Rotrex supercharger for its relative simplicity. If it does not become available I would probably go for the Comptech supercharger kit that includes the Hondata reflash. Either of them will of course include a performance I/H/E. The stock bits won't work on this car anyway, so I will start with the I/H/E while the base car is being assembled. The use of a supercharger really depends on the viability of the DBW system. If the DBW is good, that will be my expected upgrade route. If it is not, then I will go with a RSX-s TB and PRB with the K-pro. If that is the case, I may not do a SC and just go with I/H/E and tuning.
:old:Pretty fancy lingo for a new guy to the whole import tuning thing!

BT,
What are you planning on doing for the intake?
Undecided currently. I have an idea of putting a short ram intake between the roll hoops so the engine noise will enhance the driving thrills, and get clean air. Where the SL-R looks more wide than tall comparing it to the Atom, the intake would also follow that logic. I might make a small shroud to cover the intake and ECU, but it would be maybe 5-8" high and fairly wide, so it keeps with the theme of the nose cone. If you are asking about changing the intake manifold, I do not plan on that currently, as I have read very positive things about the factory intake on the K20Z3. It supposedly flows the best of all the intakes on the K20 series. I'm a little tempted to go for the Comptech SC, but that project will have to wait I think.
BT
Just checked the Old Dominion tracking and it lists the engine as 'delivered'!:coolnana:
The weight listed is 530 pounds, so that should be complete with all fluids, axles, and a pallet.

Congrats man! I wonder if Fran would be willing to post a couple pictures of your engine bolted up in the chassis? I'm anxious to see how the K20 fits in the SL-R.
It would be good, but I think Fran used to work for the CIA or something. I've been looking for a picture of an SL-R with those F1 panels it seems like forever to no avail... I'd just be glad to know the engine I paid for is the one that arrived!!!

any new update?
Just got back from skiing in Utah. No update yet, but I am visiting Fran's shop on Wednesday and will tell what stage the car is in when I return on Thursday.
BT
I just reviewed my pictures from the shop visit. Man, this car is going to be great!!! :coolnana: The quality of the welds, components, and attitudes of the people working on the car is nothing short of outstanding. I decided to order the car in yellow gelcoat. I am going to have a local paint shop do some metallic black / yellow over this unless it is not feasible. The front splitter is a plate aluminum piece that is going to be finished like the rest of the frame, and it has the winglets stepped down from the center section. :cool3: This should be very functional as well as looking very good. The rear fenders may be problematic since the side pod is fixed, and the fender would obviously have to move. There is not very much clearance apparently between the side pod and the tire, so we will see what the solution is when the car arrives! :coolnana: Fran asked me not to post the pictures I have taken, so I will wait for the okay from him.:thumb2:

Contact details for Fran: http://www.superlitecars.com/contact.html
Gelcoat is the external finish you see that resembles paint on most fibreglass work. e.g. fibreglass boats, kit cars etc.
It's actually a lot tougher than paint and with a bit of polishing can actually come up with a quite presentable finish. It just doesn't have the depth of colour you can get from a professional paint job.
We've all ordered F1 body kits, as per the RCR image at the top & left on this web site. There is also a more retro body kit coming, called the Grandprix.
From what I know we are still getting small rear fenders just to cover the top of the wheel. Don't have any specific details yet.
Thanks BT for the update, you are a very lucky man having seen the SL-R in the flesh. I get all my information word of mouth at the moment.
Ours is also in yellow gelcoat, with black fenders I think. It's in the RCR colours of course.
I'm excited that someone has actually seen some bodywork. It finally feels more real now.

Hey BT how does the Yellow look? Does it go well with the silver? Is it more like a Ferrari yellow or a canary yellow or is it exactly like the sl coupe?
Craig – Absolute PACE
05-07-2008, 04:26 PM
Exactly like the SL-C yellow. Which I think will really suit the F1 body shape. Plus on the road the yellow will give you much greater visibility to other road users.
The yellow is the same as the SL-C. It is a little less bright than the prototype SL-C yellow that you have seen pictures of. That car is painted, and the gel coat is a little more pure in color. I received pictures of Black panels fitted to the rolling concept chassis since I believe my car is just on its way back from the powder coating facility. If they put the panels on the frame I am getting it would not show as well as it does on the concept chassis since it has the suspension and wheels fitted. I will say the nose cone and side pods are very similar to the rendering, with the nose cone a little better looking in finished form (there is a little flat area on each side of the center section). I picked yellow because I think the contrast (to the frame) looks better on smaller cars, and generally darker colors look better on larger cars.
BT
Here are some more current pictures:
From what I can see in the pictures the following items are still to be done:
change tires out to the ones I sent
add radiator
add seatbelts
add tail lights / headlights
add rear firewall (this is the most important)!
add shifter mechanism
add pedal assembly / master cylinders
Overall the car is looking good, Fran said it would be ready to ship shortly!
I still don't know where the battery is supposed to go, or how the fuel pump / pickup is set up, or how the shifter cables can get routed throught the rear firewall / over the gas tank, but I guess it will be revealed before long.
:D
BT
So ,I emailed Fran and already got a response back letting me know how the remaining items will be handled. Some of it is installed by me, some they have completed at the shop. Looks like the car might ship out today (or Tuesday at the latest)! Now we get to see how Fedex passport auto transport works.

Will it arrive ready to run? I am waiting on your video & feedback to make my deposit.
No, I will have to do some final things on the car. I will install the headlights / tail lights / radiator / seatbelts / coolant piping / fuel piping & pump / chassis wiring / drive shafts / DBW throttle / shift linkage / probably some other stuff. I think the car will be on the road sometime in August / September. Looking at the pictures I think I have a game plan for the rear fenders.
BT
Chadillac
05-23-2008, 11:07 AM
What are your plans for the rear fenders?
I'll have to wait until the car gets here for the final review, but I think I can fab up some simple cycle fenders for the rear tires that go to say 1-2 o'clock (looking at the right rear wheel) and provide a matching flair on the side pod that would keep the width consistent to the bottom of the pod.
I would do the edge of the cycle fender and the side pod attachment in a dark color so the fact that they are not one piece would not show.
It might look a little funky driving down the road when there is lots of movement, but when stopped it should look pretty close to seemless.

It looks totally awesome, I'm going to put down a deposit soon.
Did Fran charge you extra to mount the motor?
Fran did not charge me extra to drop the engine in the car, but I am not sure he wants to do that on every SL-R. He used my motor to get the mounting points correct so that future buyers with the same engine can have the mounts set up correctly at the RCR facility. They dropped the motor and trans into the car when I was at the shop for a visit last month. It took them about 45 minutes or so. I am sure you could do it pretty easily with a regular 2 ton shop crane. I bought one anticipating to use it for this project for $130 at Discount Auto. The same crane is at Pep Boys right now for $120. I have found several fender options for the rear of the car for those that may be interested. I will post what I select when I order it. Looks like an 11-12" wide custom cycle fender (I'm thinking a Bob tail) will do the trick!

how much room do you have from the back of the intake manifold to the roll bar behide you. How much room do you have from the Top of the manifold to the bottom of the halo or Hoops or whatever its called. those two bars instead of the X-brace? now only how to work an exhaust into all this!
I can give all the measurements you want after the car arrives here. Should be 1-3 weeks.

Yes, Fedex bought an auto transport company that a friend's relative had started. They call it Fedex Passport auto transport. They are supposedly very careful and also have great insurance in case anything happens. One thing with the discount carriers is that they usually don't include insurance with the quote, so you are kind of running a risk using them without it.

Fedex is only fast at delivering packages. Their car transport has been booked for about 12 days and they still had no definite pickup or delivery date, only estimates that are not firm. So Fran came through with a shipper and at a better price. I'll definitely give an ETA when I find out the delivery date. No worries here though, I suddenly have lots of work to do.

Tell you what Bill, since you don't have time to go get the car, I guessing you won't have time to drive it either. Let me help. I'll try it out and tell you how it drives.....WHAT WAS THAT YOU SAID!!????
If you can get it driveable, then you can certainly drive it!!! I think I may be overwhelmed when the car gets here as to what has to be done to finish it. If it is all a bunch of nuts and bolts and wiring I can handle that. Fabrication is a much more sketchy proposition. Of course dollars can overcome any obstacle. I will keep my costs as low as possible to get a quality finished product and keep you all informed along the way.

Now here is anotehr one. How are you going to get the head lights to work with the nose on? I like the idea of having turn signals in the mirrors.
aloysius
06-15-2008, 07:30 PM
I talked to Fran a while back and he said he was working on head lights that folded down. Recently he said that he did implement the folding mechanism. Recently he said he thought head lights in the mirrors would be a good idea especially if they are the tiny HID variety. The turn signals could go anywhere especially if they are like the Hella turn signals on the Deronda fenders. I guess there's room for individual expression here.
I sure hope there is some indication for standard headlights with the 'kit'. There should be some mounting points for the lights and the lights should be included in the kit. Same with the tail lights. I'm not interested in expresssion on the lights, but rather something I can bolt to the car and connect to a wiring harness.
We'll see.

The 2 pedals may be on my car since I have an engine that uses the drive by wire. The engine setup I bought included the drive by wire throttle pedal, and shifter box. That is probably why there is also no shifter installed. I might ditch the drive by wire so a regular pedal may be needed. If it normally goes on the car I am guessing it will be in a box with the other parts that need to be installed (radiator, etc...). From the pictures I am not sure how much space is available for a gas pedal. It definitely looks tight, but that might be the angle of the picture throwing off my perception.
I would think the headlights should be close to the suspension and not back near the side mirrors.

I've got an Appalachian road trip planned for September 17-23 and plan on taking the SL-R if it is road worthy by then. Hopefully it will happen. Otherwise I will be taking the Ginetta. I did a similar trip last October and it was awesome! The best roads for driving these small lightweight cars are the tight mountainous roads of the southern Appalachians in my opinion.

Probably not, since it has become the State of Tennessee's policy to ticket everyone that drives that portion of US129. I like the NC side better, will probably do NC28, US64, Buck Creek Road, B.R.P., US19 in North Georgia, and Georgia roads 348, 384, 280, The Wolf Pen Gap route (60), and other less known local roads. Bill decided to hold off on his purchase.
As Karlo noted above I have backed out of the purchase of the SL-R. Fran was very nice about the whole deal. The good news for others is that I now have a very nice Honda K20Z3 motor / trans swap available for sale. This swap should be a great powerplant for the SL-R with 200 stock hp, and a 6 speed limited slip diff transmission. The ECU / cables / shifter / immobilizer / ignition / gas pedal should all be included in the package. It is getting delivered to me from the RCR shop in the next few weeks so I can verify what is included at that time. I paid $3950 for it from a salvage yard in Oregon. There is some scratching on the intake cover plate, but otherwise it looks very good. Others that have seen it during their shop visit all thought it was a good looking setup. If anyone is interested in it, let me know. I have no use for it and would entertain all offers.
