I found this on the SEMA website:

A version of SEMA model legislation (H.B. 365) to create a state motor vehicle definition for replica vehicles and allow these vehicles to meet only the equipment and emissions standards in effect for the model year and vehicle being replicated was approved by the Idaho State Legislature and signed into law by Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter. The new law defines a replica vehicle as a “vehicle made to replicate any passenger car or truck previously manufactured, using metal, fiberglass or other composite materials. Replica vehicles must look like the original vehicle being replicated but may use a more modern drive train.”

For us in Idaho now we just have to convince our local DMV that our exocar is just a replica of an old 60's Lotus 7, Chevron B1, etc...

I think we might have some troubles convincing our DMV of the likeness of an Exocar to a Seven.

I've also been looking up pictures of a car called the Chevron B1. It was a racecar in the 60's to compete against the 7, and now they're making a road going version called the B1 MK2. As long as you don't look at the back of the car, there is quite a resemblance between this and the SL-R with the grand prix nose. I'm planning on atleast mentioning this when I go to the DMV, and if it doesn't work I'll just register it as a kit car.

The one thing I'm worried about with it being registered as a kit car is the bumper. The absence of one that is. I read that Idaho title 49 chapter 9 on the required equipment for cars and I think everything else should be fine.

When talking with the DMV it sounded like to register a kit car you just have to show them the receipts for everything you purchased. It is then the owners responsibility to make sure it has all the required equipment. I'm not sure if this means I have to get it inspected or not. There is no emissions requirement here also. I just don't want to get hassled with the police.

You can definitely get a title for your car through Maine-ly titles.
their web site is:
http://www.getnewtitle.com/
They told me I could definitely get a title for Florida this way and I just need the VIN number from the chassis to get started. The charge they quoted me was around $900. Might be worthwhile to avoid spending several days dealing with the local government.

I don't think it would be too difficult. The danger of trying the route of a chevron B1 is that they may research it more to determine if it was ever a road car or if it was simlpy a race car. At least most computers will recognise the Lotus brand and if the engine cover package is selected :D you should not have any issue. A boxy rear cover would make the SL-R very nearly identical to a Brunton Stalker or Lotus 7.

Thanks for the info BT.

That title website was saying it could take up to 90-120 days to get your title. Are you really going to wait that long?

Also, does Fran ship his cars with a VIN number on the chassis?

The factory gives is MSO/Cert of Origin to you and the DMV see that as a "title" at least the starting point to issue a state title.

That is plan B (or C). Plan A is to finish the car on the back to complete the 7 replication and go for a state title / registration as a replica 7. If that fails or becomes difficult I will go the route of Maine-ly titles (unless I think of another option).

I think I may have to throw a cat on there for emissions testing in WA. What do you guys think?

In addition, the following Washington counties require emissions testing every two years:

* Clark

* King

* Pierce

* Snohomish

* Spokane

To register your custom-built vehicle in Washington, you will need to bring the following documents to a Vehicle Licensing Office:

* Certificate of VIN inspection from the State Patrol. The certificate must have been issued within the past 60 days.

* Current title and registration for the original vehicle or chassis, if applicable.

* Photocopy or fax of the title from your bank if the vehicle is under a lien.

* Emissions certificate, if required.

* Proof of identification.

* Odometer reading if the vehicle is less than 10 years old, if applicable.

* Title and registration fees.

I plan on having a catalytic converter on my car. No big deal, the new performance cats are not restrictive at all really. They also cost around $200 and prevent you from smelling like a gas can all day. Plus if you ever go to sell it or get stopped, a complete emmisions system is a good idea anyway.
