Technologies such as stability-control systems, antilock brakes and better airbags are the primary reason U.S. highway fatalities have steadily declined for decades (2008 had the lowest number of fatalities since 1961, and the latest data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration suggest 2009 will be even better.)
