"Flat" yes, but I have never heard it called an in-line, not even an in-plane lol

A boxer can be referred to as a horizontally opposed inline.

In-line always has all cylinders in one line. There's also the "thumper", single, vertical twin (inline twin), "W", "V", 90 degree "V", radial. VW/Porsche/Subaru have been called "H", pancake, flat four, flat six (etceteras) and boxer.
