Its gonna be a bit (gotta finish the other cars and bikes first) but life is to short to keep day dreaming! So Ive started collecting parts for the V-8 Super Shark.
Picked up this Vette motor and a 016 5n Transaxle:thumb2:

Its actually a super common combo in the Lambo and GT40 world, KEP makes an adapter and full clutch and starter package:clap:

The even better news is I ran all the numbers on the Chevy forums and I'm told its a common build using Vortec fast burn heads, GMPP fast burn manifold, .030 over flats, and the cam that's in it "should push 350HP or better (depending on the carb/exhaust)

I wish you guy's could see what Ive got planned (can you say coupe)

I don't know? I keep coming back to the problem of getting in and out and while this is just one way to make life easier I tend to like it better than anything else Ive come up with. Thoughts???
I can see a really cool roof scoop if the tubes aren't so close?

Ive also been scoping some curved glass idea's. The reading Ive done says I can cut the hood shape into the glass using a sand blaster and duct tape...LOL! hot rodders use this method on chop tops I guess.
Wouldn't be easy but.....aint nutin money cant build!

Pook,

If you were building my car, and you're almost there...The only change would be to have the 2 hoops behind each driver converted to one "D" shaped hoop. This way one could affix a screen or window as a windblocker. The new center bars are perfect for ingress/egress, they just need to be covered with a removable targa top. I've been holding back, but these additions would make the perfect semi-exo-car for me and would make it really hard for me to resist buying a roller.

I just bought a used MGB windshield frame and glass at Carlisle for my next project. I like it. The aluminum frame disassembles into four pieces and Moss Motors supplies the rubber bottom trim for less than $15. You could use just the side stanchions since they are sturdy looking. Or use sides and top or bottom as three pieces. Lots of flexibility.

Thanks JonW, I didnt know the frame was like that!

Like this....-ish?

I just measured it tonight. Out to out at base is 1320mm (52"). Top 1145mm/45". Belly at base 190/7.5; at top 125/5. Lay back 40* from vertical. Height at 40* about 295/11.5.

The TR chassis windshield is 42" wide at the base, so the MGB style would need to be cut down about 10-12" in width to fit. It will be interesting to see how this works out. My guess is the only DOT windshield we will see are going to be flat glass. I'd love to be proven wrong though. It will have to be someone else's dime that developes the curved solution.

How about a Smart car windshield? Certainly narrow.

Not as narrow as you might think. The super Beetle is probably the only one that will be close to the correct width. They run about $160 plus shipping, so maybe $200ish delivered. Not too bad, until you are on the fourth or fifth one...

here are some approximate windshield dimensions from 3 different cars in for repairs. super beetle is 45" across the top and 54" across the bottom and 27" tall @ a pillar and 33" in the middle. 2008 solstice is 45" across the top and 57" across the bottom and 18" @ a pillar and 27" in the middle. 1979 corvette is 40" across the top and 49" across the bottom and 19" @ the a pillar and 23 in the middle. all 3 have 32 degree setback. each one has 30",20" and 17" viewing area @ the middle respectively. all 3 were measured on a flat plane rather than on a radius across both top and bottom. the beethe has the most compound curves while the corvette most closely resembles the optional windshield on the atom.

I didn't say it was easy (nothing cool is easy), just possible with out spending a mint!

Here is another way...

Or I can provide a template and a company like this http://www.psautoglass.com/default.aspx
can do the cutting if someone wanted a custom curved windshield....

Neat. Finally a use for the 2 roto-zips I've acquired over the years, which remain the least used tools I own.

From the stories I have read, you spend roughly $200-250 for a piece of stock curved glass. Then you spend about 8 hours trying to use abrasive cutting methods. I haven't read about anyone who was successful on their first try without breaking the glass. So you get another one, and spend another 8 hours. Then you find it doesn't quite fit with the hood, so you get another one (glass #3). That breaks on the way to getting it fitted. Number 4 glass works! So you have about a weeks worth of time into getting the first working piece of glass, plus about $800-$1000-ish in glass (plus bits, tools, etc...).

Still have to find the frame that fits it and figure out a way to mount the glass to the frame. Getting the glass custom cut can be done for around $200 plus the glass, so figure the raw cost of the glass (after your trial and error) is going to be around $500 per windshield. The frame will take a day to make and fit, and another couple hours to mount the glass to the frame. However, maybe only the prototype was a 'second try' job, and you get the first glass to work and it doesn't break, and you find some kind of frame that fits it, and it looks good, and the supply of the glass isn't rare, and it works with the body, and everyone likes it!

Like I have said before, I would love to see a solution, but I believe there is a reason nobody has come up with one for these sub $50k cars, and that reason is cost!

Edit: There is no real reason to have the bottom edge of the glass sealed to the body or frame. You are going to get wind and rain through the sides or top anyway, so it is kind of pointless to try and seal the front. The proto windshield is nice in that it lets a decent breeze through without messing up your hair with the windshield installed.

I'm pretty sure that a waterjet can cleanly cut glass. They can cut bulletproof glass with them, so I think that a windshield could be done too.

Just a thought before spending a bunch of dough on cutting supplies and extra glass. :)

So one of the first steps in this build is to mate the SBC to the Audi trans so that fitment in the chasis can be established. I've just ordered the adapter kit, clutch, and starter for our particular combo from Kennedy Engineered Products (KEP). Hopefully, these will be soon on their way to Danny.
